Fifth Email: Update from Tom!

The following email was written by Tom since I was still in the hospital recovering, though I miiiight have contributed 50% - 99% of the content.  So, I told him what to write.  Ok, ok, demanded.  Guilty.

Hello folks,

Abby asked that I send around an update after her surgery. To get everyone up to speed, yesterday (Wednesday) Abby had surgery to remove the tumor in the back of her knee. Dr. Ready performed the surgery, and said they were able to take the tumor out as a single solid mass with a good margin around it. He said the radiation treatment caused the tumor to scar up and harden (which was the point). This made the remove relatively easy, and he feels they got all of it. There were no complications, and he was able to easily avoid the Sciatic Nerve and the artery.

She's now recovering in the hospital, and is expected to be hanging out there until Saturday (or maybe Sunday). Right now it doesn't look like she will have much, if any, physical therapy to do once she gets home. I think the goal is still to get her to be able to go up stairs on crutches before they send her home, so once she gets there she will have some mobility. To date, however, she has only tried once to get out of bed and put weight on her leg. That seemed to go decently well, but the pain medication was causing some nausea, so the trip got cut short.

Overall, we expect that she will be recovering at home for 6-8 weeks. Her next follow up is scheduled for October 10th. Until then, please check out our Google Doc for what we need in terms of food, house work, rides, etc.

As for food, her nutritionist is suggesting high protein, low calorie meals with lots of veggies, because she won't be able to have much exercise in the next few months. So, please try to avoid the baked goods, and heavy (but delicious) comfort foods.

Thank you all for your support,
-T&A
